Do you think adults can have lots of imagination?
Absolutely – adults can have vast imagination, though it often expresses itself differently than in childhood. While children’s imagination tends to be free-form and playful, adults channel imagination into problem-solving, innovation, and creative work. A scientist imagining a new hypothesis, an engineer visualising a bridge before it is built, or a parent inventing a bedtime story on the fly – these are all acts of imagination. The myth that adults lose imagination comes from confusing imagination with fantasy or pretending. Many adults suppress their imaginative impulses because they have been taught that practicality and realism are more valuable. However, adults who remain curious, expose themselves to art and new experiences, and allow themselves to daydream tend to retain and even deepen their imaginative capacities. In fact, some forms of imagination – like strategic foresight or empathy – only fully develop with adult life experience.
What subjects are helpful for children's imagination?
Art and creative writing are the most obvious, as they directly train the ability to generate original images and narratives. But less obviously, history is tremendously helpful – imagining what life was like in ancient Rome or during the Industrial Revolution expands a child’s sense of possibility. Science, especially astronomy and biology, fuels wonder about the universe and its strange creatures; thinking about black holes or deep-sea life is a form of imaginative stretch. Literature, of course, is imagination boot camp – reading requires constructing entire worlds from mere words on a page. Even mathematics can be imaginative when taught as pattern-finding and exploring “what if” scenarios (e.g., “what if numbers worked differently?”). The common thread is subjects that allow open-ended exploration, multiple right answers, and room for wonder. Subjects that focus solely on rote memorisation or single correct answers tend to shrink, not expand, imagination.
What kind of jobs require imagination?
Far more jobs than people typically realise – imagination is not limited to artists and writers. Architects and designers must imagine spaces and objects that do not yet exist, anticipating how people will use them. Entrepreneurs and business strategists imagine future markets, new products, and organisational changes that have no precedent. Engineers and scientists imagine solutions to technical problems, often visualising mechanisms or experiments in their mind’s eye. Teachers imagine different ways to explain a concept until it clicks for a particular student. Even surgeons imagine the steps of a complex operation before making the first incision. In fact, any job that involves planning, problem-solving, or communication benefits from imagination. The only jobs that truly require no imagination are repetitive, tightly scripted tasks – and those are precisely the jobs most vulnerable to automation. So imagination is not a luxury; it is a core workplace skill.
Do scientists need imagination in their work?
Yes, absolutely – science without imagination is just data collection, not discovery. Albert Einstein famously said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge,” because knowledge is static while imagination generates new hypotheses. Before any experiment, a scientist must imagine a possible explanation for a phenomenon – that is, form a hypothesis. Designing an experiment to test that hypothesis requires creative thinking about controls, measurements, and confounding variables. When data does not fit existing theories, scientists must imagine new frameworks, sometimes leading to paradigm shifts (like Darwin imagining natural selection). Even in routine lab work, interpreting unexpected results requires imaginative leaps to connect dots that have not been connected before. The stereotype of the cold, purely logical scientist is a myth; the best scientists are remarkably playful and imaginative in their thinking.

Yes, imagination is a skill that can be deliberately cultivated, much like a muscle. The most effective training involves regular “divergent thinking” exercises – generating many possible uses for a brick, or multiple endings to a story. Exposure to diverse inputs (books, travel, art, conversations with unusual people) provides raw material for the imagination to recombine. Constraint-based creativity, like writing a poem with only 50 words or designing a product for a tiny budget, forces imaginative problem-solving. Meditation and unstructured daydreaming also help, as they quiet the inner critic that often judges ideas before they fully form. Importantly, environments that punish mistakes or ridicule “silly” ideas kill imagination, regardless of training. So while there may be genetic differences in baseline creativity, almost everyone can grow their imaginative capacity with the right habits and psychological safety.
*Why do schools often neglect imagination? (added)
Schools often neglect imagination because it is hard to measure, and modern education systems are obsessed with standardised testing. Imaginative answers, by definition, are unpredictable and do not fit neatly into multiple-choice bubbles. Teachers under pressure to cover a packed curriculum and raise test scores tend to prioritise “correct answers” over “interesting possibilities.” Additionally, a classroom of 30 students makes managing open-ended imaginative work very difficult – it is noisy, messy, and unpredictable. Many teacher training programs themselves do not emphasise creative pedagogy, so new teachers default to the transmission model (lecture, then test). There is also a cultural bias in many countries that views imagination as “childish” or a distraction from serious academic work. The irony is that neglecting imagination may produce students who can pass tests but struggle with real-world problems that have no textbook answer.
Reading a model answer is not the same as saying one. The sample above shows what a strong Part 3 answer sounds like. What it cannot tell you is how yours sounds — whether you hesitate, repeat the question back, or run out of things to say at forty seconds.

How is Part 3 different from Part 1?
Part 1 is about you; Part 3 is about people in general. The questions move to society, causes and consequences, and the answers are expected to be longer and more developed — an opinion plus a reason plus an example.
What if I have no opinion on the question?
You are not marked on the opinion, so pick one and support it. Saying you have never thought about it and stopping there leaves the examiner nothing to assess.
How long does Part 3 last?
Four to five minutes. The topics develop out of your Part 2 card, so the discussion is usually connected to what you just described.
