Duolingo English Test Fill in the Blanks — Practice and Examples
A sentence is shown with the end of one word missing. You type the missing letters to complete the word so the sentence makes sense.
What it tests
Collocation and vocabulary in context. Most items turn on a fixed phrase — "pay attention", "take into account", "make an impression" — so knowing which word naturally goes with which is worth more than knowing rare words.
Worked example
Complete each word.
- The driver paid a heavy fi___ for ignoring the red light.
- We must take the weather into acco___ before we fix a date.
- She made a good impre___ on the interview panel.
- Nobody paid any atten___ to the sign on the gate.
- The company keeps a close wat___ on the cost of fuel.
Show the answers
- The driver paid a heavy fine for ignoring the red light.
- We must take the weather into account before we fix a date.
- She made a good impression on the interview panel.
- Nobody paid any attention to the sign on the gate.
- The company keeps a close watch on the cost of fuel.
How to do well
- Read the whole sentence before typing: the words after the gap usually decide it.
- Think in phrases, not single words. "Keep an ___ on" is almost always "eye".
- Check the grammar of what you typed — a plural or past form is a common slip.
