Prepositions of place — in, on, at, under, next to
Where something is: in, on and at for places, plus under, behind, between, next to, opposite and the rest — using the rooms and furniture from Unit 26.
Unit 5 was prepositions of TIME (at 6:30, on Monday, in July). This unit is the other half: the same small words, but now they answer the question Where? Examples use the rooms and furniture from Unit 26 (house and home).
A — What is a preposition of place?
A preposition of place tells you where something or someone is. It comes before the place: in the kitchen, on the table, under the bed, next to the door.
Two questions to keep apart:
- When? → prepositions of time (Unit 5): at 7 o'clock, on Monday, in July
- Where? → prepositions of place (this unit): at home, on the wall, in the bedroom
The rest of this lesson is in the General English course:
- B — The big three: in, on, at
- Remember
- C — Where exactly? Position words
- D — at, in or on with places and buildings
- Correct vs wrong
- E — in or on for transport
- F — Describing a room: There is / There are + place
Try it: in, on or at?
in = inside · on = a surface · at = a point.
