Do you think air pollution comes mostly from mobile vehicles?

It depends on the location – in many cities, mobile vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles) are indeed the largest source of air pollution, particularly nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. However, in industrial areas, factories and power plants burning coal or heavy fuel oil can be even greater contributors. Agriculture also plays a significant role through methane and ammonia emissions, as well as the burning of crop residues. In developing nations, the burning of solid fuels for cooking and heating indoors is a major source that often goes undercounted. That said, for most urban residents, vehicle exhaust is the most visible and personal source – they see traffic jams and smell fumes daily. The exact proportion varies, but transportation generally accounts for 20-30% of global CO2 emissions and a higher share of local air pollutants like carbon monoxide. So while it is not the only cause, it is a primary target for immediate improvement.

Do you think people need to change the way of transportation drastically to protect the environment?

Yes, a drastic change is necessary, but “drastic” does not mean everyone must immediately give up cars. It means shifting the modal split – the share of trips taken by car, public transit, bike, or foot – toward cleaner options. In many cities, a drastic change would involve building safe bike lanes, expanding bus rapid transit, and implementing congestion pricing to discourage unnecessary car trips. For long-distance travel, high-speed rail can replace many short-haul flights, which are disproportionately polluting per passenger mile. Electrification of vehicles is part of the solution, but it does not solve traffic congestion or the resources needed to build millions of batteries. The most drastic and effective change would be redesigning cities themselves so that daily needs – work, school, groceries – are within a 15-minute walk or bike ride. People will change their habits when the cleaner option is also the more convenient, affordable, and pleasant option. Moralism alone will not work; infrastructure and incentives are what truly shift behaviour.

How are transportation systems in rural and urban areas different?

Urban transportation systems are typically dense, multimodal, and geared toward high-volume movement. Cities usually have networks of buses, subways, trams, bike-sharing, and ride-hailing services, with frequent service throughout the day. Rural areas, by contrast, have very low population density, making public transit economically unviable – a bus might come only twice a day, if at all. Consequently, rural residents rely almost entirely on private cars, often driving longer distances for work, school, or medical appointments. Road quality also differs: urban roads are paved, lit, and maintained year-round, while rural roads may be unpaved, unlit, and vulnerable to weather closures. Parking is abundant and free in rural areas but scarce and expensive in cities. Finally, emergency services (ambulances, fire trucks) have shorter response times in dense urban areas compared to remote rural ones. These differences mean that a “one-size-fits-all” transportation policy rarely works; solutions must be tailored to density and geography.

Which mode of transport is more popular in your country, a bicycle or a car?

Cars are far more popular overall, both as a status symbol and as a practical necessity in most areas. Outside of a few major cities, bicycle infrastructure is poor, and distances are long, making biking impractical for daily commutes. In the capital, however, cycling has seen a resurgence in recent years, with dedicated bike lanes and shared bicycle programs gaining users. Young people, especially students, are more likely to use bicycles for short trips, but they often aspire to own a car as soon as they can afford one. Electric bicycles have become a popular compromise, offering speed and cargo capacity without needing a license. But in terms of sheer numbers, cars dominate, with two-car households being common even in lower-middle-income families. The car culture is deeply ingrained, associated with freedom and adulthood, so shifting this will require not just infrastructure but a cultural re-evaluation.

In my country, the biggest barrier is usually convenience and reliability – if a bus comes every 30 minutes and is often late, people will drive. The “last mile” problem also deters use: even if a train station is nearby, getting from the station to your actual destination may be difficult without a car. Safety and comfort matter too; overcrowded, poorly lit, or unclean buses deter riders who can afford alternatives. In some cities, the transit network does not serve the places people actually need to go – it was designed decades ago for a different employment geography. Cost is a barrier for the poor, but for the middle class, time savings and comfort often outweigh the lower cost of transit. The most effective improvements are increased frequency, dedicated bus lanes (to beat traffic), and integrated payment systems. If transit is faster and less stressful than driving, people will switch – as seen in cities with world-class systems like Singapore or Zurich.

The health effects are severe and well-documented, ranging from short-term irritation to chronic disease. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from vehicle exhaust penetrates deep into the lungs and enters the bloodstream, triggering inflammation. Long-term exposure increases the risk of lung cancer, heart attacks, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Children living near major roads have impaired lung development and higher rates of asthma. Pregnant women exposed to high pollution levels have increased risk of low birth weight and premature birth. There is also emerging evidence linking air pollution to cognitive decline, dementia, and even depression. Economically, the costs are staggering: lost workdays, hospital admissions, and premature deaths. Many people do not realise that vehicle pollution is not just an environmental issue – it is a public health crisis that kills far more people annually than car accidents. Reducing it should be seen as a health intervention, not just a climate measure.
