Do you like modern art or traditional art?
I appreciate both, but I have a slight preference for traditional art. I find the skill and detail in classical paintings genuinely breathtaking, and they often carry a rich sense of history and meaning. Modern art can be intriguing too, though I'll admit I sometimes struggle to understand the more abstract pieces.
Do you like art?
Yes, I do. Even though I’m not artistic myself, I enjoy seeing creativity expressed through paintings, music, and design. Art makes life richer and helps people see things from different perspectives.
Have you ever visited an art gallery?
Yes, I’ve visited a few, especially when travelling. I find galleries peaceful, and it’s interesting to see famous works in real life rather than on a screen. Sometimes modern art confuses me, but I still appreciate the effort behind it.
Do you think it would be interesting for you to be an artist?
It's an appealing idea in some ways, as being an artist would allow for a great deal of creativity and self-expression. However, I don't think I have enough natural talent to pursue it seriously, and it can be quite an unstable career. So while I admire artists, I'd probably keep art as a hobby rather than a profession.
Reading a model answer is not the same as saying one. The sample above shows what a strong Part 1 answer sounds like. What it cannot tell you is how yours sounds — whether you hesitate, repeat the question back, or run out of things to say at forty seconds.

Common questions
How long should Part 1 answers be?
Two or three sentences. Part 1 is a warm-up and one-word answers stall the conversation, but a ninety-second speech on your home town is the wrong length too — the examiner has a list of questions to get through.
How long does Part 1 last?
Four to five minutes, covering three familiar topics. Your identity is checked first, then the questions start.
Can I ask the examiner to repeat a question?
Yes, and it costs you nothing. Asking for a repeat is normal conversational English; guessing at a question you misheard and answering the wrong one is far more damaging.
