Band 8.5–9.0 model essay
312 wordsAn increasing number of individuals suffering from various health conditions are turning to alternative medicine rather than consulting conventional, formally qualified doctors. I am convinced that this trend is largely negative, although it can prove beneficial for managing minor, non-life-threatening ailments.
On the positive side, alternative treatments can genuinely benefit individuals suffering from mild, chronic discomfort that conventional medicine sometimes addresses imperfectly or only partially, without offering full relief. To clarify, practices such as acupuncture, massage therapy or herbal remedies are sometimes effective in alleviating symptoms like mild back pain or stress-related insomnia, conditions for which pharmaceutical medication often carries unwanted side effects, such as drowsiness or long-term dependency on sleeping pills. For patients seeking a gentler, lower-risk approach to manageable discomfort, alternative medicine can provide meaningful relief without the dependency risks associated with certain prescription drugs, while also allowing them to feel more actively and personally involved in their own care and daily wellbeing routines.
However, the negative implications of this trend considerably outweigh its benefits, particularly regarding serious illnesses. This is attributable to the fact that alternative practitioners typically lack the rigorous, standardised medical training required to diagnose underlying conditions accurately. To illustrate, a patient experiencing persistent fatigue and unexplained weight loss might attribute it to simple stress and pursue herbal remedies instead, when the underlying cause could in fact be a serious condition, such as anaemia or early-stage cancer, requiring urgent conventional treatment. By the time such patients eventually seek proper medical attention, having delayed diagnosis for months through reliance on unproven remedies, their prognosis is often considerably worse than it would have been with prompt medical intervention at the outset.
To conclude, while alternative medicine can offer gentle relief for minor, non-threatening ailments, I consider this overall trend predominantly negative, since reliance on unqualified practitioners for genuinely serious conditions risks delayed diagnosis and considerably worsened long-term health outcomes.
