At present, a considerable number of individuals rely on social media platforms both to maintain existing friendships and to establish entirely new connections with people online. In my view, this represents a largely positive development, provided that users maintain a healthy balance between online communication and genuine face-to-face interaction.

To begin, social media offers substantial benefits in sustaining relationships that might otherwise fade due to geographical distance. To clarify, individuals who relocate for education or employment can remain closely connected with friends and family through instant messaging, video calls and shared updates, thereby preserving emotional bonds that would have been considerably more difficult to maintain in the pre-digital era. Moreover, social media enables people to forge entirely new connections based on shared interests, regardless of physical proximity or geographical distance. For instance, individuals passionate about niche hobbies, such as specific musical genres or academic subjects, can readily locate like-minded communities online, forming genuine friendships that would be considerably more difficult to establish through conventional local networks alone.

Nevertheless, excessive reliance on social media can also generate meaningful drawbacks. This is attributable to the fact that online interactions, however frequent they may be, often lack the emotional depth and nuance of face-to-face communication, such as tone of voice and physical presence, which are essential to fully understanding another person's feelings. Consequently, individuals who substitute in-person socialising almost entirely with online communication may experience heightened feelings of loneliness despite maintaining numerous digital connections. Furthermore, constant exposure to carefully curated depictions of others' seemingly perfect lives can foster unhealthy social comparison, gradually undermining users' self-esteem and overall psychological well-being, particularly among younger and more impressionable users.

To conclude, although social media carries certain risks related to diminished emotional depth and unhealthy comparison, I consider it a predominantly positive development, as it enables people to sustain meaningful relationships and forge valuable new connections, provided it does not entirely replace face-to-face interaction.

Ideas & vocabulary for this topic

Ideas you can use

  • Introduction: State that using social media to stay in touch with friends and meet new people is largely positive, provided users balance it with real-world interaction.
  • Body 1: Argue the positive side: social media preserves friendships across distance, such as after relocating, and lets people find like-minded friends through shared niche interests regardless of location.
  • Body 2: Argue the negative side: online interaction lacks the emotional depth of face-to-face contact, which can deepen loneliness, and constant exposure to curated lives can damage self-esteem through comparison.
  • Conclusion: Reaffirm the overall positive verdict, provided social media supplements rather than fully replaces face-to-face relationships.
