Band 8.5–9.0 model essay
318 wordsAn increasing number of people today are taking an interest in fashionable clothing and dressing well in their daily lives. I believe this is largely a positive development, provided that it does not encourage excessive or wasteful consumption among consumers of all ages and income levels.
To begin, a growing interest in fashion allows individuals to express their personalities and boosts their self-confidence in everyday life. To illustrate, choosing outfits that reflect one's own taste can make people feel considerably more comfortable in social and professional settings, which in turn can improve how they interact with and are perceived by others, including at job interviews and important social gatherings where first impressions matter greatly. Moreover, this trend supports considerable economic activity, generating substantial employment in design, manufacturing, marketing and retail, industries that rely heavily on consumers' ongoing enthusiasm for new styles and seasonal collections year after year, sustaining millions of jobs globally across design studios, factories and retail supply chains.
However, this trend also carries several notable drawbacks that cannot be overlooked by policymakers or consumers themselves. Chief among them is the environmental cost of fast fashion, as the constant demand for new styles encourages textile manufacturers to mass-produce cheap garments using resource-intensive processes and environmentally harmful dyes, contributing significantly to water pollution and landfill waste worldwide, particularly in developing countries where environmental regulation is comparatively weaker and enforcement is inconsistent at best, often leaving local communities to bear the resulting costs. Additionally, an excessive focus on appearance can place financial and psychological strain on individuals who feel pressured to constantly update their wardrobe in order to remain fashionable, sometimes leading to overspending well beyond their actual means and mounting personal debt.
In conclusion, while the growing interest in fashionable clothing can enhance self-expression and support economic growth, its environmental and financial costs mean that it should be pursued mindfully rather than excessively by both individuals and industry.
