Although modern technology has made international communication instantaneous, many businesspeople continue to travel considerable distances to attend meetings in person. I am convinced that the advantages of such face-to-face encounters outweigh their disadvantages whenever the matter under discussion is commercially significant or dependent on long-term trust, though not necessarily otherwise.

Firstly, when negotiations involve substantial sums of money or the establishment of a long-term partnership, physical presence yields benefits that far exceed the cost and inconvenience of travel. To clarify, in-person meetings allow participants to read body language, tone and unspoken hesitation, all of which are lost through a screen. For instance, a supplier deciding whether to extend credit to a new client is far more likely to be reassured by a handshake and a shared meal than by a video call, since these gestures convey commitment and sincerity that words alone cannot. In such cases, the resulting trust often translates directly into more favourable and durable contracts, making the expense of travel a worthwhile investment.

However, for routine or low-stake interactions, the drawbacks of travelling become considerably more serious than any benefit gained. This is attributable to the fact that flights, accommodation and time away from the office carry a real financial and productivity cost, one that is difficult to justify for a meeting that could be resolved through a single video call. Moreover, frequent long-haul travel contributes to fatigue and jet lag, which can diminish an employee's performance for days afterwards, as well as to a company's carbon footprint. Unless the meeting genuinely requires the depth of connection that only physical presence can provide, these costs tend to outweigh whatever marginal advantage face-to-face contact might offer.

To conclude, while technology has undeniably simplified international communication, I believe the advantages of face-to-face meetings outweigh the disadvantages when high-value or relationship-building matters are at stake, whereas for routine business the reverse is generally true.

Ideas & vocabulary for this topic

Ideas you can use

  • Introduction: Paraphrase the prompt and state a conditional stance: face-to-face meetings are worth their cost when the matter is high-value or trust-dependent, but not necessarily for routine business.
  • Body 1: Argue the cases where the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages: high-stake negotiations and long-term partnerships benefit from reading body language and building personal trust, which translates into more favourable, durable contracts.
  • Body 2: Argue the cases/factors that make the disadvantages more serious: for routine or low-stake meetings, the financial cost, lost productivity, fatigue and environmental impact of travel outweigh any benefit, so travel should be reserved for meetings that truly need it.
  • Conclusion: Restate the conditional position: advantages outweigh disadvantages for high-value, relationship-building meetings, while for routine matters the reverse is generally true.
