Band 6.0 model answer
255 wordsIn some countries every child must start learning a foreign language at six years old. This decision has advantages, but it also creates some difficulties.
The main advantage is that small children learn languages more easily. Their brain is very flexible, and they copy sounds without difficulty, so they can speak with a good accent, while an adult who starts at thirty always keeps a strong accent. Children also are not afraid of making mistakes: a small child speaks and laughs, but a teenager is shy and stays silent.
Another advantage is that knowing another language is useful for the future. Children who speak English can study at a foreign university, find a better job, watch films and travel without problems. Some researchers also say that bilingual people concentrate better and can do two tasks at the same time.
On the other hand, the school day is not longer, so if we add a foreign language, we must reduce another subject, maybe reading, mathematics or sport. For a child who still cannot read well in his own language, this is a serious problem.
In addition, two lessons a week for many years give a very small result. Many students finish school after ten years of English and still cannot have a simple conversation, because forty minutes twice a week is not enough.
In conclusion, starting a language at six gives a better accent and more confidence, but it takes time from other subjects and gives poor results if the number of lessons is too small.
