Some individuals choose to rent their homes instead of purchasing property outright. In my view, the benefits of renting outweigh the drawbacks for most people, provided that their circumstances do not call for long-term stability in one location.

To begin, renting offers considerable financial flexibility that homeownership rarely provides. To clarify, tenants avoid the substantial upfront costs associated with purchasing property, such as large deposits, mortgage interest and property taxes, freeing up capital that can instead be invested in education, a business venture, or an emergency fund. Moreover, renters can relocate with relative ease whenever their circumstances change, whether due to a new job opportunity in another city or a desire to live closer to family. For example, a young professional early in their career can move between cities to pursue better employment prospects without the burden of selling a property first, a process that can take months and incur substantial fees. Given these advantages, renting proves highly advantageous for individuals whose lifestyles demand adaptability.

However, these benefits can be undermined for certain groups, particularly those who prioritise long-term stability and asset accumulation. This is because rent payments, unlike mortgage instalments, build no long-term equity, meaning tenants may spend decades paying for accommodation without ever owning a tangible asset. Furthermore, renters remain vulnerable to landlords raising rent or terminating leases, which can force sudden, disruptive relocations, particularly disadvantageous for families with children settled in local schools. Consequently, for individuals seeking permanence and financial security in their later years, such as those approaching retirement, the disadvantages of renting may outweigh its short-term flexibility, making homeownership the more prudent long-term choice.

To conclude, while renting affords considerable financial flexibility and mobility, particularly beneficial for the young and career-driven, I believe its advantages outweigh the disadvantages mainly for those who value adaptability over long-term asset ownership and stability.

Ideas & vocabulary for this topic

Ideas you can use

  • Introduction: State the conditional position that renting's advantages outweigh the disadvantages for most people, except those who need long-term stability.
  • Body 1: Explain the cases where renting's advantages outweigh disadvantages: no large deposit, mortgage interest or property tax, and easy relocation, illustrated by a young professional moving cities for a better job.
  • Body 2: Explain the factors that make disadvantages more serious: no equity built over years, vulnerability to rent rises or lease termination disrupting families with children, so those nearing retirement are better off buying.
  • Conclusion: Restate the conditional outweigh position — renting's advantages outweigh for the young and adaptable, but not for those prioritising long-term ownership and stability.
