Band 8.5–9.0 model essay
324 wordsIt is argued that international bodies, such as the United Nations, have ceased to be effective in resolving global political disputes. In my view, while the organisation frequently struggles to prevent conflicts among major powers, it retains considerable value in addressing smaller-scale disputes and humanitarian crises.
To begin, the United Nations often proves powerless when confronting conflicts involving powerful nations. To clarify, the Security Council's veto system allows any of its five permanent members to block resolutions that conflict with their own interests, effectively paralysing collective action. For instance, during recent conflicts involving major powers, opposing vetoes have repeatedly prevented the Council from authorising meaningful intervention or imposing binding sanctions, leaving hostilities to continue unabated. This structural weakness means that whenever a dominant nation is directly or indirectly involved in a dispute, the organisation's capacity to enforce international law and broker lasting peace is severely undermined, rendering it largely symbolic in such circumstances.
However, the organisation continues to demonstrate genuine effectiveness in conflicts that do not directly involve its most powerful members. This is attributable to the fact that UN peacekeeping missions have successfully stabilised numerous smaller, localised conflicts, particularly in regions without significant strategic interest to major powers. For example, peacekeeping forces deployed in several African nations have helped enforce ceasefires, protect civilians and support fragile transitions to peace. Moreover, the UN's specialised agencies continue to deliver indispensable humanitarian aid, refugee assistance and mediation services in crises worldwide, functions that no other international body performs at a comparable scale. These achievements suggest that the organisation's relevance persists, albeit selectively.
To conclude, although the United Nations frequently fails to resolve conflicts involving powerful nations due to its veto structure, I am convinced that it remains an effective and often indispensable actor in smaller conflicts and humanitarian emergencies, meaning its overall effectiveness should not be dismissed entirely.
