Band 6.0 model answer
230 wordsEvery year millions of people travel to other countries. Some people believe that tourism destroys the places that tourists visit, while others think it is the main income of many regions. In my opinion, both opinions are correct in different situations.
On the one hand, tourism can create serious damage. When too many people visit an old building or a beach every day, the place becomes dirty and it is slowly destroyed. Prices also increase in these cities, so local families cannot buy food or pay the rent, because owners prefer to rent flats to tourists for a higher price. In addition, many traditions become a show for visitors and lose their real meaning.
On the other hand, for many small towns tourism is the only source of money. It gives jobs to guides, drivers, waiters and hotel workers, and these families have no other work in the region. The government also uses this money to repair museums and historical buildings, so tourism actually protects the heritage.
Moreover, when a place becomes famous, the local people understand that their traditions and nature have value, and they start to protect them instead of destroying them.
In conclusion, I believe tourism is not good or bad in itself. If the number of visitors is controlled and the money stays in the local area, tourism helps the place; without control, it damages it.
