How to read this question

You are given one statement and asked how far you agree. The examiner is checking that you take a clear position in the introduction and hold it consistently to the conclusion — a partial agreement is fine, an unclear one is not.

Paragraph plan

Introduction — Paraphrase the prompt and state a clear partial-agreement position. Avoid debate-framing language not in the prompt.

Body 1 — Develop the main argument in favour of agreement — one focused idea explained in depth.

Body 2 — Acknowledge the exception or limiting condition — sponsorship is not inherently negative if properly governed.

Conclusion — Restate the conditional position clearly and without contradiction.

Major corporations frequently use sporting events as a platform to advertise their products, and some believe that this practice damages sport. In my view, while corporate sponsorship can indeed distort certain aspects of sport, its overall impact remains largely positive when properly regulated.

To begin, commercial sponsorship can genuinely undermine the integrity and spirit of sport. To clarify, when profit becomes the primary motivation behind major sporting events, decisions such as match scheduling, venue selection and even rule changes are increasingly influenced by advertisers' interests rather than by the athletes or spectators. For instance, matches are sometimes rescheduled to more commercially lucrative time slots, inconveniencing loyal fans purely to maximise television advertising revenue. Furthermore, the association of sporting events with unhealthy products, such as fast food or alcohol brands, sends a contradictory message, given that these products conflict with the very values of fitness and discipline that sport is meant to embody.

However, corporate funding also delivers considerable benefits that should not be overlooked. This is attributable to the fact that sponsorship revenue enables the construction and maintenance of modern stadiums, funds athlete training programmes and subsidises ticket prices, making sport more accessible to ordinary spectators. For example, many grassroots football clubs depend heavily on sponsorship deals to survive financially and continue developing young talent who might otherwise lack the resources to pursue a sporting career. Provided that governing bodies impose reasonable restrictions, such as banning tobacco or excessive alcohol advertising, sponsorship can coexist with sport's core values while ensuring its long-term financial sustainability.

To conclude, although the commercialisation of sport through corporate sponsorship can compromise scheduling integrity and promote unhealthy products, I believe its overall contribution, particularly in funding infrastructure and grassroots development, outweighs these drawbacks, provided that appropriate regulatory safeguards are firmly enforced.
