An increasing number of individuals today opt for self-employment rather than conventional company positions. This shift is primarily driven by the desire for autonomy and flexible working arrangements, although self-employment also carries notable disadvantages.

The foremost reason behind this trend is the appeal of greater personal autonomy. To clarify, self-employed individuals can determine their own working hours, select projects that align with their interests, and avoid the hierarchical constraints typical of corporate environments. This autonomy is particularly attractive to those who value work-life balance, as they can structure their schedules around personal commitments, such as childcare or travel. Furthermore, advances in digital technology have considerably lowered the barriers to launching independent ventures. To illustrate, freelancing platforms and social media now enable individuals to market their skills and secure clients without substantial startup capital, a feat that was considerably more difficult in previous decades.

Nevertheless, self-employment entails considerable drawbacks. Chief among these is income instability, since self-employed individuals lack the guaranteed salary and benefits, such as health insurance and pension contributions, that traditional employment typically provides. Consequently, they must independently manage financial planning during periods of reduced income, which can generate persistent stress. Moreover, self-employed individuals often shoulder disproportionate administrative burdens, including tax filing, invoicing and client acquisition, tasks traditionally handled by dedicated departments within established organisations. This administrative burden is often exacerbated by the unpredictability of client demand, making long-term financial planning considerably more difficult than in salaried employment.

To conclude, while the pursuit of autonomy and reduced barriers to entry largely explain the growing preference for self-employment, prospective entrepreneurs should carefully weigh the accompanying financial instability and administrative demands before pursuing this path.
