Band 8.5–9.0 model essay
296 wordsWorking remotely has recently emerged as a more prominent employment model. According to some, this erodes workplace discipline and routines. However, in my view, remote work is beneficial for the majority and detrimental to only a small fraction of individuals.
To begin, in most cases, distance-based employment produces only favourable outcomes given its considerable advantages. First, remote working enables employees to reallocate time otherwise devoted to commuting to and from work. To clarify, those conventional workplaces often endure lengthy commutes in heavy traffic, resulting in substantial time loss. However, this concern is largely irrelevant for remote employees, who can allocate saved time to their families, fostering closer relationships and stronger family bonds. Moreover, remote work generates tangible financial benefits by minimising commuting and subsistence costs, such as fuel and business lunches. Hence, the adoption of remote work maximises the real value of remuneration by reducing unavoidable work-related expenses and increasing funds for household expenditures. Collectively, these benefits cultivate a more committed workforce and generate productivity gains.
Nevertheless, the success of remote work is heavily contingent on employees' ability to establish and maintain an effective home working environment. To illustrate, if individuals do not have a dedicated workspace, minimal distractions and clear boundaries between professional and personal life, they are unlikely to maintain focus and follow a structured routine. Instead, their performance can be easily compromised by constant interruptions, disrupting their workflow. Such mismanagement can undermine performance and output, potentially leading to the termination of the contract between the worker and the company.
To conclude, I am convinced that remote work boosts productivity rather than obscuring it by leaving more disposable income for the family budget and additional time for family interactions. However, it also remains dependent on employees' capacity to establish and maintain suitable working conditions.
