Some maintain that domestic animals should be confined indoors at all times, whereas others believe pets should be permitted outdoor access. In my view, both positions carry merit, and the most appropriate approach depends largely on the species of animal and the safety of the surrounding environment.

On the one hand, proponents of keeping pets exclusively indoors emphasise the protection this affords against external dangers. To clarify, animals allowed to roam outside are exposed to traffic accidents, contact with diseased or aggressive animals, and the risk of poisoning from discarded food or chemicals. For instance, cats that wander unsupervised in urban areas face considerably higher mortality rates from vehicle collisions than those kept indoors. Confinement therefore substantially reduces the likelihood of injury or premature death.

On the other hand, others argue that outdoor access is essential to an animal's physical and psychological well-being. This is because many species, particularly dogs, require regular exercise and environmental stimulation that a confined indoor space cannot adequately provide. Without sufficient outdoor activity, pets may develop behavioural problems, such as excessive barking or destructive chewing, stemming from pent-up energy and boredom. Access to fresh air and natural surroundings also allows animals to engage in instinctive behaviours, such as exploring scents, which contributes meaningfully to their overall contentment.

From my perspective, the appropriate balance depends on both the animal in question and the safety of its surroundings. To illustrate, dogs generally benefit from supervised outdoor walks in secure areas, given their high exercise requirements, whereas smaller or more vulnerable animals, such as rabbits or certain cat breeds, may be safer remaining largely indoors, particularly in densely trafficked urban neighbourhoods. Ultimately, owners should assess their specific pet's needs and the risks present in their local environment before deciding on an appropriate routine.

To conclude, while some advocate for keeping pets permanently indoors for their safety, and others prioritise outdoor freedom for their well-being, I believe the ideal approach should be tailored to each animal's species and the safety of its immediate surroundings.

Ideas & vocabulary for this topic

Ideas you can use

  • Introduction: Frame both views on pet confinement and state that the right balance depends on the animal's species and the safety of its surroundings.
  • Body 1: Present the case for keeping pets indoors: this avoids traffic accidents, disease exposure and poisoning, citing cats' higher mortality rates when left to roam.
  • Body 2: Present the case for outdoor access: dogs especially need exercise and stimulation, and confinement can cause behavioural problems like destructive chewing from boredom.
  • Body 3: Give a balanced opinion: match the routine to the species and local risk, e.g. supervised walks for dogs but mostly indoor life for smaller or more vulnerable pets in busy areas.
  • Conclusion: Reaffirm that neither total confinement nor full outdoor freedom is universally right; owners should tailor the routine to their specific pet and environment.
