How to read this question

You are given one statement and asked how far you agree. The examiner is checking that you take a clear position in the introduction and hold it consistently to the conclusion — a partial agreement is fine, an unclear one is not.

Paragraph plan

Introduction — Paraphrase the prompt and state a clear position. The student disagreed with the statement, so the model essay takes the same side — disagreement — but with a conditional acknowledgement.

Body 1 — Main argument — hobbies serve a restorative, personal function that does not require difficulty.

Body 2 — Concession — some people genuinely enjoy challenge-based hobbies, and difficulty can enhance enjoyment for them, but this is not universal.

Conclusion — Restate the position clearly without introducing new ideas.

Some contend that a hobby must be challenging in order to bring genuine enjoyment. I disagree with this view in general, although I accept that a degree of challenge can enhance satisfaction for certain individuals depending on their personality and goals in life.

To begin, many people derive considerable pleasure from simple, undemanding pastimes precisely because such activities allow them to relax without added pressure. To illustrate, activities like casual gardening, listening to music or watching a favourite television series require little skill or effort, yet they remain deeply satisfying because they offer an accessible escape from the stress of daily obligations, such as work deadlines or family responsibilities. If enjoyment genuinely depended on difficulty, such widely popular leisure activities would not attract the vast audiences that they consistently do across all age groups and income levels, from teenagers to retirees with plenty of free time on their hands. Furthermore, forcing unnecessary complexity onto a pastime can transform it into another source of pressure and self-criticism, defeating its very purpose as a relaxing escape from routine responsibilities and daily stress at work or at home, and potentially discouraging people from taking up any hobby at all.

That said, difficulty can heighten enjoyment for individuals who are specifically motivated by mastery and personal achievement. To clarify, activities such as learning a musical instrument or mastering a complex sport, like rock climbing, become more rewarding over time as practitioners overcome obstacles and witness visible, measurable improvement in their ability. In such cases, difficulty is not the direct source of enjoyment itself but rather a catalyst for the sense of accomplishment and pride that follows sustained, dedicated effort over months or even years of consistent, disciplined practice and self-improvement.

In conclusion, while a challenging hobby can bring an additional sense of achievement to certain individuals, difficulty is not a prerequisite for enjoyment. Countless people find lasting, genuine satisfaction in simple, low-effort pastimes that demand little beyond a willingness to relax and unwind.
