Some maintain that reading a wide variety of books is invariably a beneficial habit, while others contend that its value depends on the specific books being read. In my view, although reading broadly cultivates a valuable habit in itself, the quality and content of the material significantly determine the depth of benefit gained.

On the one hand, proponents of broad reading argue that any form of reading, regardless of genre, stimulates the mind more effectively than passive entertainment such as television or social media. To clarify, engaging with written text, whether fiction, non-fiction or even light entertainment novels, requires sustained concentration, expands vocabulary and strengthens comprehension skills. For instance, a person who regularly reads popular thrillers, despite their perceived lack of literary depth, still exercises cognitive faculties and sustains a lifelong reading habit that could later extend to more substantial works.

On the other hand, others insist that the specific content of a book determines whether reading is genuinely beneficial. This is attributable to the fact that certain books offer little more than superficial entertainment, contributing minimal intellectual or moral development, while others, such as well-researched non-fiction or classic literature, cultivate critical thinking, empathy and deeper cultural understanding. For example, a reader who exclusively consumes sensationalist material may absorb little of lasting educational value compared with someone who regularly engages with thought-provoking historical or philosophical texts.

From my perspective, both viewpoints hold merit depending on the reader's stage of development. For children and reluctant readers, any reading material that sustains engagement is valuable, since it establishes the habit itself. However, once this foundation is secure, actively seeking more substantive, varied literature becomes important for deeper cognitive and moral growth, particularly for readers seeking genuine intellectual development rather than mere entertainment.

To conclude, while reading of any kind fosters a valuable habit, I believe that as readers mature, the quality and substance of what they read increasingly determine the true extent of the benefits they derive.
