How to read this question

You are given two opposing views and asked to discuss both before giving your own. The single most common Band 6 cause here is discussing both sides but never stating your own opinion, or stating it only in the conclusion.

Paragraph plan

Introduction — Paraphrase the topic, acknowledge both views, and state a position clearly.

Body 1 — Present the first view — health benefits — with explanation and specific support.

Body 2 — Present the second view — global benefit — with explanation and specific support.

Conclusion — Summarise both views and restate the opinion concisely.

A growing number of individuals now choose to abstain from eating meat and fish altogether, believing that this dietary choice not only safeguards their own personal health but also benefits the wider world. In my view, while a meat-free diet offers genuine advantages on both fronts, its benefits should not be overstated without acknowledging certain important limitations.

The argument that avoiding meat and fish improves personal health is broadly supported by nutritional evidence. Diets low in animal fat and rich in vegetables, legumes and whole grains are consistently associated with reduced risks of heart disease, obesity and certain cancers, since regular consumption of processed and red meat has repeatedly been linked to elevated cholesterol and chronic inflammation. For this reason, many people who eliminate meat from their diet subsequently report improved energy levels, clearer skin and better long-term physical wellbeing.

Equally, proponents highlight the environmental case, since livestock farming is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, widespread deforestation and excessive water consumption. Producing a single kilogram of beef requires substantially more land, feed and water than growing an equivalent quantity of plant-based food, meaning that a large-scale shift away from meat could meaningfully ease pressure on natural resources and slow the pace of global climate change if adopted widely enough.

Nevertheless, I believe the benefits of this diet depend heavily on how it is implemented. A poorly planned vegetarian diet lacking sufficient protein, iron or vitamin B12 can itself cause health problems, and individual dietary change alone cannot offset environmental damage caused by industrial agriculture without accompanying policy reform. Consequently, avoiding meat is beneficial chiefly when it is nutritionally balanced and paired with broader environmental measures.

In conclusion, avoiding meat and fish can genuinely improve both personal health and environmental sustainability, yet these benefits remain conditional rather than automatic. I therefore largely agree with the view, provided the diet is followed responsibly, planned with care, and supported by wider systemic change.

Ideas & vocabulary for this topic

Ideas you can use

  • Introduction: Paraphrase the claim that avoiding meat and fish benefits both personal health and the world, and state a conditional opinion that the benefits are real but should not be overstated.
  • Body 1: Discuss the personal-health side of the claim: plant-rich, low-fat diets lower heart disease, obesity and cancer risk because processed and red meat are linked to high cholesterol and inflammation.
  • Body 2: Discuss the world-benefit side of the claim: livestock farming drives greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and water use, so cutting meat consumption at scale eases pressure on the planet.
  • Body 3: Give own opinion that the benefits are conditional: a poorly planned meat-free diet risks nutrient deficiencies, and individual diet change alone cannot fix industrial agriculture without policy support.
  • Conclusion: Largely agree with the view overall, provided the diet is nutritionally balanced and paired with wider systemic change.
