How to read this question

You are given one statement and asked how far you agree. The examiner is checking that you take a clear position in the introduction and hold it consistently to the conclusion — a partial agreement is fine, an unclear one is not.

Paragraph plan

Introduction — Paraphrase the prompt and state a clear conditional position.

Body 1 — Acknowledge the side with merit — cases where war seems unavoidable.

Body 2 — Argue the main position — that war is rarely truly unavoidable, as most conflicts have negotiable roots.

Conclusion — Restate the conditional position clearly and concisely.

Some believe that armed conflict is occasionally the only means of securing lasting peace. I partly agree: military action can, in narrow circumstances, be the last resort against aggression that would otherwise continue unchecked, although I do not accept that war is unavoidable in the majority of disputes, since peaceful alternatives are far more often available than nations admit.

On the side I agree with, history offers cases in which armed resistance was the only realistic way to halt an aggressor determined to seize territory or eliminate an entire population. To clarify, when diplomatic channels have been exhausted and one party continues to inflict harm regardless of negotiation, inaction can itself prolong suffering rather than prevent it. For instance, international efforts to reason with regimes bent on invasion or genocide have repeatedly failed, and only decisive military intervention eventually halted the violence. In such extreme cases, war functions less as the cause of instability than as the last remaining safeguard against a far greater and more prolonged catastrophe.

However, this reasoning applies only to a narrow set of circumstances, and it should never be treated as a general rule. Nevertheless, in the vast majority of disputes, leaders resort to war prematurely, before genuinely exhausting diplomacy, economic sanctions or mediation by neutral parties. Admittedly, these slower approaches demand patience and compromise, which political leaders under domestic pressure are often unwilling to offer. That said, the human and economic devastation caused by armed conflict, including displaced populations and destroyed infrastructure, routinely outweighs whatever peace is eventually achieved, and frequently sows the resentment from which future conflicts grow.

To conclude, while I accept that war can occasionally be unavoidable when facing an aggressor who leaves no peaceful option, I maintain that in most disputes, patient diplomacy remains both a more effective and a far less costly route to lasting peace.

Ideas & vocabulary for this topic

Ideas you can use

  • Introduction: Paraphrase the prompt and state a balanced/conditional thesis: agree only that war can be a last resort in narrow cases, disagree that it is generally unavoidable.
  • Body 1: Develop the side agreed with: when diplomacy is genuinely exhausted and an aggressor continues to inflict harm (e.g. invasion or genocide), armed resistance can be the only realistic way to stop a greater catastrophe.
  • Body 2: Develop the exception/condition: in most disputes leaders resort to war before exhausting diplomacy, sanctions or mediation, and the human/economic cost of conflict usually outweighs the peace it buys, feeding future conflict.
  • Conclusion: Restate the same balanced/conditional position: war can be unavoidable only against an aggressor who leaves no peaceful option; otherwise, diplomacy is the more effective route to peace.
