How to read this question

You are given one statement and asked how far you agree. The examiner is checking that you take a clear position in the introduction and hold it consistently to the conclusion — a partial agreement is fine, an unclear one is not.

Paragraph plan

Introduction — Paraphrase the prompt and state a full-agreement position clearly.

Body 1 — Develop the first core argument — commercial risk-aversion driving repetition — in depth.

Body 2 — Develop the second core argument — digital platform algorithms reinforcing nostalgia — in depth.

According to some, contemporary media increasingly relies on nostalgia rather than original creative output, endlessly recycling familiar stories instead of producing new ones. In my view, while mainstream film and television production has indeed become dominated by remakes and reboots, this trend does not extend uniformly across the entire media landscape.

To begin, major studios have grown reluctant to finance genuinely original productions, favouring instead franchises and remakes with proven commercial appeal. To clarify, given the substantial financial risk associated with producing content, studios rely on established intellectual property, such as previously successful films or television series, to guarantee a loyal audience base and predictable box-office returns. For instance, numerous animated classics and superhero franchises have been repeatedly rebooted or extended into sequels over the past decade, often reproducing familiar plots with only superficial modifications. This risk-averse approach to production, driven primarily by shareholder pressure for consistent profitability, has contributed to a media landscape saturated with recycled narratives rather than innovative storytelling.

Nevertheless, this characterisation does not accurately capture the full scope of contemporary media. This is because streaming platforms, unconstrained by the financial pressures of theatrical release, have created considerable space for original, low-budget productions to reach global audiences. For instance, numerous critically acclaimed series and documentaries, produced independently of major studio backing, have achieved substantial popularity through platforms that prioritise diverse content over guaranteed franchises. Similarly, independent musicians and content creators can now bypass traditional record labels entirely, publishing original material directly to audiences through digital platforms, thereby fostering considerable creative diversity outside mainstream channels. This parallel ecosystem clearly demonstrates that genuine innovation persists and even thrives, even as major studios retreat into familiar, low-risk territory rather than investing in genuinely untested creative ideas.

To conclude, although mainstream commercial media has become markedly more nostalgic and formulaic, genuine originality persists and even flourishes within independent and streaming-based production, meaning this criticism applies only to part of the industry.
