Since life expectancy continues to rise, some argue that the age at which people retire should be substantially increased. In my view, while raising the retirement age is a reasonable response for many professions, it should not be applied uniformly across all types of work.

To begin, extending the working age is a logical adjustment given that people today remain physically and mentally capable for considerably longer than previous generations. To clarify, advances in healthcare and nutrition mean that many individuals in their late sixties retain the cognitive sharpness and physical stamina required for professional roles, particularly in office-based or intellectually demanding occupations. Moreover, raising the retirement age helps alleviate mounting pressure on pension systems, which are increasingly strained by a growing elderly population supported by a shrinking working-age workforce. For instance, countries with ageing populations, such as Japan, have already extended retirement thresholds to preserve the financial sustainability of their pension schemes without dramatically increasing taxation or reducing benefits for future retirees.

However, this policy should not be uniformly imposed across all professions, since some occupations remain physically punishing regardless of a worker's chronological age. This is attributable to the fact that manual labourers, such as construction workers or miners, experience accumulated physical strain that makes prolonged working lives considerably less feasible, irrespective of medical advances. Forcing such individuals to delay retirement could jeopardise both their health and workplace safety. Therefore, any increase in the retirement age should be accompanied by flexible provisions, allowing workers in physically demanding roles to retire earlier or transition into lighter responsibilities, while those in less strenuous professions can reasonably continue working for longer.

To conclude, although raising the retirement age is justified by increased longevity and the need to sustain pension systems, I believe this policy must remain flexible, granting earlier retirement options to those in physically demanding occupations rather than applying a single threshold to the entire workforce.

Ideas & vocabulary for this topic

Ideas you can use

  • Introduction: Paraphrase the claim and state the balanced position: agree with raising retirement age, but not uniformly.
  • Body 1: Argue that longer, healthier lifespans and pension sustainability justify raising the retirement age, illustrated by Japan extending its retirement threshold.
  • Body 2: Give the exception: physically demanding jobs like construction or mining make delayed retirement unsafe, so flexible provisions are needed for such workers.
  • Conclusion: Restate the balanced position that retirement age should rise but remain flexible depending on the physical demands of the job.
