Band 8.5–9.0 model essay
316 wordsSocial media platforms are increasingly substituting genuine face-to-face communication across many societies worldwide. In my view, whether its advantages outweigh its disadvantages largely depends on how deliberately it is used, since it can strengthen relationships in some contexts while eroding them in others.
On balance, social media's advantages can outweigh its drawbacks when it functions as a supplement to physical contact rather than a substitute for it. To clarify, platforms enable people separated by geography, such as migrant workers, students abroad, or long-distance relatives, to maintain meaningful contact through video calls and instant messaging, which would otherwise be prohibitively expensive or logistically impossible. For instance, a parent working abroad can witness their child's first steps or daily milestones in real time through a simple video call, sustaining an emotional bond that physical distance would otherwise sever entirely. In such circumstances, the connectivity social media provides substantially outweighs any potential loss of in-person interaction, since the realistic alternative is not enhanced face-to-face contact but no meaningful contact at all.
However, the disadvantages become more serious when social media is used as a convenient replacement for accessible, nearby relationships. To illustrate, individuals who habitually communicate with local friends solely through messaging apps, despite living within a short walking distance of one another, gradually lose the nuanced emotional cues, such as tone and body language, that only in-person conversation reliably provides. Over time, this erosion of interpersonal skill can heighten social anxiety and diminish genuine intimacy between people who could otherwise meet easily and strengthen their bond in person. To prevent these consequences, users should consciously reserve social media for maintaining otherwise-inaccessible relationships while deliberately prioritising face-to-face contact with those nearby.
To conclude, I believe the benefits of social media clearly outweigh its drawbacks specifically when it connects people who cannot otherwise meet in person, whereas it becomes genuinely harmful when it needlessly substitutes for accessible, meaningful face-to-face relationships.
