How to read this question

You are given one statement and asked how far you agree. The examiner is checking that you take a clear position in the introduction and hold it consistently to the conclusion — a partial agreement is fine, an unclear one is not.

Paragraph plan

Introduction — Paraphrase the prompt and state a clear disagreement position.

Body 1 — Main argument against the shorter working week — economic productivity and business viability.

Body 2 — Concession and limitation — some knowledge-based or creative workplaces may benefit, but this does not justify a universal policy.

Conclusion — Restate the disagreement clearly, reflecting the conditional nuance from Body 2.

It is argued that the standard working week should be reduced, granting employees an extended weekend. In my view, this proposal can benefit most employees, although it may prove impractical in certain essential industries.

To begin, a shorter working week can substantially improve employees' wellbeing and, counterintuitively, their productivity. To clarify, when workers are granted additional time to rest, pursue hobbies, or spend time with family, they typically return to work with renewed focus and reduced burnout, offsetting the fewer hours spent at their desks. For instance, several companies that have trialled four-day working weeks have reported that overall output remained stable or even improved, since employees completed core tasks more efficiently when motivated by extra leisure time. This suggests that reduced hours need not come at the expense of organisational performance, and may even lower long-term absenteeism caused by stress-related illness. A longer weekend could also allow parents to spend more time with their children, strengthening family relationships that are often neglected under demanding work schedules.

However, this arrangement is not universally feasible, particularly within sectors that require continuous staffing, such as healthcare, emergency services and manufacturing. This is because such industries depend on uninterrupted service delivery, and reducing standard hours without a corresponding increase in staff numbers could compromise patient safety or production schedules. Consequently, while the shortened week may suit administrative or office-based professions, its implementation across all sectors would require careful staffing adjustments and, in some cases, additional recruitment to maintain service continuity. Employers in such sectors may also need to offer rotating shift patterns to ensure that no single team bears an unsustainable workload throughout the transition period.

To conclude, I largely agree that a shorter working week with a longer weekend would benefit most employees' wellbeing and productivity, though its practicality varies across industries with continuous operational demands.
