In order to mitigate traffic congestion and air pollution, petrol should be offered to the public at higher prices. In my view, while this approach can help alleviate these issues, for maximum efficiency, it should be accompanied by improvements in public transit.

To begin, through higher pricing policies for petrol, people can be dissuaded from driving their own private vehicles. To clarify, people show a greater preference for cars over public transportation, as the monthly petrol expenses people incur do not sufficiently outweigh the comfort cars offer. Therefore, by introducing higher petrol prices, people are likely to view public modes of transportation as a more economically viable option.

However, this approach alone cannot help produce the intended outcome. This is attributable to the fact that people are more inclined to choose cars not only because petrol is reasonably priced, but also because cars provide access to a broader range of destinations. Consequently, authorities should provide more extensive bus and train services so that people do not have to drive to reach relatively remote areas.

Furthermore, governments should also take initiatives to ensure that public transport offers convenient travel conditions comparable to those of cars. To explain, without quality climate control and comfortable seats on buses, people's inclination to cars can be lessened only to a limited extent. Hence, to offset the advantages of cars, people should be supplied with public transportation that is equally convenient.

To conclude, although higher petrol prices can contribute to a reduction in car use and the resultant lower air contamination, it should be complemented with public transport that provides ease of access and comfortable travel.

Ideas & vocabulary for this topic

Ideas you can use

  • Introduction: State conditional agreement that higher petrol prices help but must be paired with improvements to public transit for maximum effect.
  • Body 1: Explain how higher petrol prices make private cars less economically attractive than public transport, since the comfort of driving no longer outweighs the rising cost.
  • Body 2: Argue that pricing alone fails because cars still reach more destinations than buses and trains, so authorities must expand bus and train routes into remote areas.
  • Body 3: Argue that public transport must also match the comfort of cars — climate control, comfortable seating — or people's preference for driving will only shrink slightly.
  • Conclusion: Restate that higher petrol prices reduce car use and pollution, but only work fully alongside accessible, comfortable public transport.
