Band 6.0 model answer
274 wordsIn the past many people helped in their local community, for example in a sport club, a church or an organisation for old people, but today fewer people do this. There are several reasons, and there are also ways to change the situation.
The first reason is time. In most families now both parents work full time, and many people travel one or two hours to their office. When they come home, they must cook, clean and help the children with homework, so they simply have no free hours in the week.
The second reason is that people move very often. Before, a person was born, worked and died in the same town, so he knew everybody and he wanted to help his neighbours. Today young people move to another city for study or work, and they do not feel any connection with the place where they rent a flat.
Another reason is that volunteering became complicated. Now an organisation asks for documents, a police check and training courses before a person can help for two hours, and many people give up.
To encourage volunteering, organisations should offer short and simple tasks. If a person can help for one hour on Saturday without long preparation, many more people will agree.
In addition, companies could give their employees one or two paid days every year for volunteering. This solves the problem of time, and it is also good advertising for the company.
In conclusion, people volunteer less because they have no free time, they move often and the process is complicated, but short tasks and paid days from employers could bring many of them back.
