Band 8.5–9.0 model essay
325 wordsIn numerous countries, average body weight is rising while levels of health and fitness are declining. This is largely attributable to sedentary daily routines and the ready availability of processed food, but several measures could reverse this trend.
The principal cause of this decline in fitness is that modern life requires far less physical exertion than in previous decades. To clarify, many jobs now involve sitting at a desk for most of the day, while household chores and commuting are increasingly automated or motorised, leaving people with few opportunities to move their bodies. Furthermore, entertainment has shifted indoors, as streaming services and video games keep both adults and children seated for hours at a stretch rather than engaging in outdoor play or sport. Compounding this issue is the widespread availability of cheap, calorie-dense processed food. Since ready meals and fast food require no preparation time and are heavily marketed, they have gradually displaced home-cooked meals that traditionally contained more vegetables and fewer additives, so that even families who intend to eat healthily often default to convenience out of sheer time pressure.
However, several measures could be adopted to reverse this trend. First, governments could redesign cities to make physical activity part of daily life rather than a separate task, for instance by building dedicated cycle lanes and ensuring that parks are within walking distance of residential areas. When active travel becomes convenient, people are far more likely to walk or cycle instead of driving. Moreover, authorities could impose additional taxes on sugary drinks and heavily processed snacks while subsidising fresh produce, making healthier choices the more affordable option. Schools should also be required to provide daily physical education and nutrition classes, so that healthy habits are instilled before poor patterns become entrenched.
To conclude, rising weight and declining fitness stem chiefly from sedentary lifestyles and cheap processed food, but urban redesign, taxation of unhealthy products, and school-based education could collectively help reverse this troubling trend.
