Band 6.0 model answer
247 wordsIn recent years many people have decided to eat less meat or to stop completely. There are several reasons for this change, and it will have important consequences for farmers.
The first reason is the environment. Newspapers and television explain that producing beef requires an enormous quantity of water and land and produces a lot of greenhouse gas. Young people especially read this information and decide to reduce their meat consumption.
The second reason is health. Doctors say that eating a lot of red meat can cause heart problems and some kinds of cancer, so people who want to live longer eat more vegetables and fish instead.
A third reason is price and choice. Meat has become expensive, and today supermarkets sell many vegetarian products which taste good, so it is much easier to change than it was twenty years ago.
This situation will affect farming in several ways. Farmers who keep cattle will sell less, so some of them will lose money and may close their farm, especially small farms. Other farmers will change and start producing vegetables, beans or plants for the new vegetarian products.
In addition, if fewer animals are needed, a lot of land will become free, and this land can be used for forests or for crops for people instead of food for animals.
In conclusion, people eat less meat because of the environment, health and price, and this will force farmers to produce less meat and to change to other products.
